40 Years of Dedication to Youth Basketball

meyers-1Coach Steve Meyers started coaching at the age of nineteen at the YMCA in Yonkers, N.Y. 1969. After coaching there for three years he coached youth basketball for two years in Scranton, Pa. His team reached the state regional semi-finals.

In 1975 he moved to Charleston and began coaching at Nativity School, where he stayed for fifteen years. During that time his teams won three state Catholic School Championships and numerous Bishop England League Championships.

From 1989-1992 he split time between Charleston Day School, the Greater Charleston Basketball League and Divine Redeemer. In 1992 his senior boys team at Divine Redeemer captured the Catholic School State Championship.

From 1992-2008 Coach Meyers dedicated all of his coaching time to Charleston Day School. The small school on Archdale Street under his guidance won many divisional titles. His girls teams won two senior and one junior league titles. In 1999 three of the four teams that he coached played in The Trident League championship games-Junior Girls, Senior Girls and Senior Boys.

In 2002 he retired from Bell South to focus full time on coaching basketball. He continued to coach at Charleston Day School and started S.H.O.O.T.S., a business geared to individual and small group basketball lessons. In 2008 Coach Meyers parted ways with Charleston Day School and coached a girls team at Porter Gaud and boys team at Blessed Sacrament. This year he will be coaching two boys teams from Porter Gaud and a girls and boys team from Stiles Point.

In 2004 he formed teams that would travel to play post-season games in YBOA affiliated tournaments. Starting with two teams this program has grown to six teams. These teams have won several titles: Statesville, NC 2005 12U Boys, Cherokee, NC 2006 13U girls, Charleston SC 2006 14U boys, and Waynesville, NC 2007 16U Boys.

In the spring of 2009 his six YBOA teams made seven out of a possible 7 championship games, winning three 12U boys, Morlanton, NC, 13U boys, Forrest City, NC, & 14U boys, Waynesville, NC.

In addition to coaching teams during and after the season, he has run basketball camps for thirty years at Fort Johnson Middle School, Charleston Day School, and at Palmetto Christian School. Coach Meyers has coached close to 2,000 games and his teams have won over 1,450 of them!
